As a Wedding, Event and Real Estate Photographer, I am often thought of last and grossly underpaid. Last to be considered, called ‘The Photographer’ and not by my name, the last to be booked, treated like a servant, an afterthought. Sometimes I earn even less per hour than what people do in retail and I have studied Commercial Photography, studied various business and photography training courses, bought all the expensive equipment, along with the constant marketing of myself and my business.
It is a tough gig. But I love it.
Why? I had to think about it this week, as this year has been a really tough one. Not just for me but for a lot of people. My husband and I lost our best friend, Tom, to lung cancer and people just aren’t booking photographers like they used to, or certainly not paying what they used to. Yes, we adjust and pivot and hang in there or we give up. There is no shame in giving up, though. Especially when you have given it your all.
Anyway, I had to think about what it is that I do, that makes a difference in people’s lives and in mine too.
I CREATE REMINDERS OF WHY LIFE IS WORTH LIVING IN THE FIRST PLACE.
Wow. That is pretty huge and a really special thing that I do. From weddings, engagements, birthdays and events, bridal showers, family portraits and everything else in between.
That is what will keep me going and being a Photographer. I create reminders of why life is worth living in the first place, for YOU.
